This is not a history although it does contain historical material. It is recognition for a man who was clearly deeply interested in preserving the history of our village. Steve Cook (1910-1994) was born, bred and died in the village, the son of John Bazaleel Cook, village postmaster and Alice Cook the postmistress. It is not known how much if any of his information was gathered by his mother Alice; she was certainly responsible for the large collection of annotated postcards of the village and it is she who wrote the lovely poem displayed on the front page of this website. It is however certain that Steve Cook collected historical memorabilia all his life. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of Harvington which he would divulge to anyone who wished to listen. We at Crooked Walls would not have known of the little sketch, which also happened to be the earliest depiction the church yet found, unless one day Steve had not knocked on the door. It is unfortunate that his knowledge and material was not recorded for posterity.
Material on The Limes was given to the previous owner and then passed on to the present. Other material must been handed to people but has not survived. In due course other material may be found to add to this page.
The material published below in the envelope was donated by Clive Allan and is assumed to be a tiny indicator of the mass of material available to him.
